Gold Finch Designs is an all female powered company based in Oakland, California. We offer interior and exterior landscape design, installation and garden care services. Using only organic sustainable agricultural practices, we work with clients to maximize their growing space, increase edible production and bio-diversity in all of our gardens. We specialize in bringing beauty, year-round color and pollinator gardens to life. We perform all of the demolition, design, hardscaping, irrigation and installation.
Gold Finch Designs was founded in 2012 by Alexis Mastromichalis and Jason Watts in North Carolina. Jason lived on a friend’s farm where he cultivated a wide variety of heirloom fresh cut flowers. Alexis and Jay agreed to partner and quickly became one of the Triangle’s premier floral designers, providing weekly arrangements to local museums, restaurants and bars.
In 2013, Alexis had the opportunity to move to Berkeley, California to further expand her education in landscape design. Taking classes at Merritt College and working full-time at Rock & Rose Landscapes in San Francisco, she quickly immersed herself in learning more about Northern California’s special micro-climates and year-round capability to grow many plant species.
Despite the distance, Alexis and Jay continued to partner together until 2015, supplying flowers and arrangements for various weddings, special events and celebrations.
In 2015, Alexis had the opportunity to host a local flower pop-up shop in South Berkeley, California called the Gold Finch. There, she collaborated with Alexa Davis to host a wide variety of ecological events including tea ceremonies, crafts and cocktails and landscape design consultations.
For the next two years, she worked for Green’s Gardens, a local garden care company that manages over 150 gardens. As the lead gardener, she gained hands-on gardening, pest management and landscape design experience. By witnessing what “worked” and didnt work in the Bay Area’s foggy climates, she continues to push for integrating a wide variety of native and pollinator plants to combat local pests.
After fifteen years of working for other designers, she decided to launch Gold Finch Designs full-time to the world. Just like the bird, we fly in and offer garden coaching sessions, design, full installation and garden care services. We love to share our work and knowledge through our East Bay Sidewalk Plant Tour initiative launched in 2016.
Thank you to the many local businesses and non-profits who have supported our work including The Fox Theater, Edible Schoolyard Project, City Slickers Farm, Starline Social Club, Bacano Bakery, Ashby Marketplace, Hoi Paloi and many more.
